A brief guide to pollinators in Gipuzkoa

Have you ever wondered which animals, apart from the honey bees you are familiar with, carry out the vital process of pollination? This brief guide to pollinators found in the fields, forests, towns, and cities of Gipuzkoa will help you explore the diversity of these animals. All are threatened to a greater or lesser extent by various factors, including climate change. Whether you are a nature enthusiast or simply curious to learn about pollinators and the threat of climate change, this short guide will help you get to know and, in turn, better care for the pollinators in our environment. Go outside and observe your pollinator neighbors, see if you can find any of the ones in the guide among the flowers, or simply watch which insects you see moving through the flowers. You’ll surely be surprised by the diversity of insects that are involved in pollination.

The idea

The main objective of this project was to showcase some of the great diversity of pollinators present in Gipuzkoa, with the aim of raising public awareness and knowledge about their importance. The aim was to foster greater appreciation for these species and raise awareness of the threats they face, such as climate change.

The result

To achieve this goal, a collection of scientific illustrations was developed, forming a small, detailed, and accessible visual guide to some of these insects. The carefully crafted illustrations made it possible to identify different species and highlight the great diversity of pollinators beyond honeybees. A total of eight species were illustrated, two for each group of pollinators. Since knowledge of these insects is essential for their protection, the project emphasized the importance of recognizing them in order to care for them. *This guide is part of the “El zumbido de cambio” (The Buzz of Change) project, funded through the grant program for research and innovation projects on climate change of the Department of Sustainability of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, and was carried out under the supervision of the Aranzadi Department of Entomology. .
