Short-snouted seahorse
- Tipo de proyecto: Scientific illustrationType of project:
- Técnica: Mixed media. Illustration created in pencil and digitally finished.
The Short-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus hippocampus) is a fish that lives in shallow waters. Its characteristic curved shape and head, reminiscent of a horse, make it one of the most unique species in the ocean. They are experts at camouflage, which helps them go unnoticed.
Despite their tiny size (barely 15 centimeters on average), this species hides some interesting facts. For example, it is the male who incubates the eggs! The females deposit their eggs in a special pouch located on the male’s abdomen, where they develop until they hatch.

The idea
The main idea was to create a detailed, scientific illustration that clearly and attractively showed the anatomical and morphological differences between male and female seahorses.
The result
Scientific illustration in shades of blue highlighting a male and female seahorse, accompanied by key anatomical details. Features such as the head with its distinctive snout and the curled prehensile tail are highlighted. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the male’s brood pouch, as in this species it is the males who incubate the eggs, and on the differences between the two sexes in the shape of the abdomen and body texture. To highlight these details clearly and accurately, a monochromatic pencil illustration was chosen to better show the anatomical features.
